Large Aperture Shutter

DFM Engineering offers a full aperture shutter, for CCD cameras, for spectrographs, and for giant telescopes with large beam sizes.

This shutter is designed as an optical performance component.  Computer control opens the shutters for a specified exposure time period.  By gating the entire entrance pupil uniformly, it delivers consistent exposure timing across the full field, avoiding the gradients and timing offsets that slit style shutters can introduce on wide format detectors. The focal plane consequence is cleaner photometry, more stable background subtraction, and more repeatable astrometric centroids. That matters in high cadence survey work where small systematic biases accumulate into real measurement error.

In ATLAS service, the shutter also functions as an operational reliability tool. It protects the optical train between exposures, reduces susceptibility to wind driven dust and stray light during transitions, and enables deterministic cadence without adding vibration or settle overhead that would steal duty cycle.

Our shutter's flawless performance has been well proven with over ten million operational cycles and counting.  Built for continuous nightly operation, it supports the kind of sustained throughput where the system behaves like production infrastructure and the data stays trustworthy at scale.
